Crepitation – Monstrous Eruption of Impetuous Preposterosity

Viscious Instinct Records
Released 23 June 2023

Monstrous Eruption of Impetuous Preposterosity by UK Brutal Death Metal outfit Crepitation is, without a doubt, one of the most batshit crazy things I’ve reviewed in my 13+ years of reviewing albums. Ridiculous song titles, ‘Vicious Entwattering of Obstinant Nepotistic Shithouses’ being one of my favourites, incoherent song structures and almost comedy-like vocals pervade all 13 tracks throughout the bands 2nd full length release.

The very first thing to note is that this album will not appeal to the typical metalhead. This is as niche an album as you can get. Brutal Death Metal is a niche sub-genre, Monstrous Eruption of Impetuous Preposterosity takes this to the nth degree. There is absolutely no compromise given by Crepitation, in fact, I would hazard a guess that they don’t actually give a shit about what people think about the album, in that they have released what they wanted to release and if folk like it, all is well, and if they don’t, fuck-em. I stand to be corrected.

Track wise, most of the songs are short. The album opener is the longest track at nearly 4 minutes, but aside from the most others are between 2 and 3 minutes long with the odd

exception. This is actually quite clever from our boys. Each song crams so much material into them, that long-form songs would just be an absolute shambles.  As it is, some of the tracks are just incomprehensible, be it the frog-like ‘ribbit ribbit ribbit’ vocals in, ‘Rancid Blubbery Encrustments’, to the band appearing to make it up and play anything they want in, ‘Priapismic Whisking of Mucilaginous Concrete Slurry’.

What the listener needs to realise is that Crepitation are not making it up as they go along. The songs are structured with complete care, alongside a deft touch that belies the sound. Many of the songs have the guitarists strangling their fretboards, then the coolest of riffs will kick in for 30 seconds or so before the rest of the song is gleefully mutilated in the classiest of ways.

Truth is, I don’t know if I like Monstrous Eruption of Impetuous Preposterosity. The notes I took listening to the album for this 1 listen review include the words, ‘I’ve no idea what’s going on’, and this is for arguably the best track on the album, ‘Bloated Festering Mass of Corpulent Immensity’. I also wrote on more than 1 occasion that the vocals were ‘irritating’.

But the fact is, my scoring is based on whether the album deserves a 2nd listen or more. The standard of musicianship on show is outstanding, the songs don’t get boring and I genuinely believe that if you gave this a 2nd listen, a 3rd, 4th and 5th listen, you could hear a different album each time.

I don’t know if I like Monstrous Eruption of Impetuous Preposterosity but that doesn’t say that I might not love it!
