Cannibal Corpse – Chaos Horrific
Metal Blade Records
Released 22 Sept 2023

Unable to tour following the Violence Unimaginedsessions, legendary Death Metal overlords Cannibal Corpse wasted no time in firing into another album, Chaos Horrific.
Some may think that this being their 15th album should mean that the band have lost their hunger and that they are merely going through the motions. This could not be further from the truth. Cannibal Corpse are as relevant a band as they have ever been. Perhaps even more relevant. Modern death metal bands owe Cannibal Corpse more than they can ever give. Most of these bands will also be distraught that a band that helped define the genre are releasing albums that they will never, ever match.
Chaos Horrific essentially carries on from where its 2021 predecessor finished. Yet, it is also more rounded and, dare I say it, accessible, although accessible is relative. You will not get too many Nickelback fans jumping on the Corpse bandwagon.
The simple fact is that, alongside bludgeoning riffs and searing solos, there is a ton of groove scattered across many of the tracks. I lost track the amount of times I just fell into the riff, feeling it filter through my veins.
‘Frenzied Feeding’ has a riff that drips groove, yet it brings the heavy that only Corpse can. ‘Vengeful Invasion’ begins with a nice riff, lacking any sort of visceral aggression before the heavy appears. This has the effect of allowing founder member Alex Webster’s bass to be slightly more prominent in the mix.
Speaking of the production, Eric Rutan yet again does a magnificent job behind the desk. Not only that, but his guitar work with Rob Barrett is nothing short of outstanding. Being a full time member of the band has not hindered the background work he has carried out on 6 occasions now. Special mention must also go to Paul Mazurkiewicz on drums, whose unrelenting aggression is maintained across each of the 10 tracks on offer.
As good as the band are, the dominant force on the album is the vocal performance of one George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher. It is utterly remarkable that this man, after all these years fronting THE death metal band, still has a voice that puts most other vocalists in the genre to shame. He is miles ahead in ability and pure growly dirty talent. Dirty enough to be growls and yet, clean enough to be able to make out the lyrics, Corpsegrinder is utterly essential to the Corpse sound. Chaos Horrific would not be the album it is if it wasn’t for good old George!
Chaos Horrific is a fantastic album. That said, it may not sit alongside your classic favourites. It is modern Cannibal Corpse. It is a band who know how to deliver and, due to the sheer consistency of the band, it could almost be described as typical Corpse fare. It is an album that maintains the urgency of Violence Unimagined, and it builds on the obvious influence of Eric Rutan, which is a very good thing to build on.
Ultimately, Chaos Horrific demonstrates that Cannibal Corpse are still the daddies of the Death Metal genre and nobody is close to topping them. This album will appear on top 10 lists anywhere you read them.
