Broder – Skarpretterfossilet

Written by:

The production on Skarpretterfossilet, the 3rd album by Danish blackened sludge duo, Broder is deliberately murky! The slimy goodness of the mix will leave an indelible layer of glorious filth all over your body that will remind you of the joy you felt when listening to the album for the 1st time.

Skarpretterfossilet is a relatively short album, and it would be even shorter if it didn’t have a 15 minute and 43 seconds closing track ‘Byldemor’. Interestingly, the previous 4 songs accumulated time is also 15 minutes and 43 seconds, if my notoriously bad maths is correct. Whether this is coincidence or a supreme piece of judgement and skill from Broder, I will let minds immeasurably superior to mine to decide. Needless to say, an epic closing track on a short album is a brave move by the Danish duo.

Throughout the 5 tracks, the vocals are supremely aggressive, with a few tracks having decent backing grunts and growls that sits perfectly within the confines of each song. This is especially prevalent in ‘Kraniekløversken’ and ‘Bondejagt’.

Inside the raw production, there are some fantastic riffs that range from bludgeoning through to slower paced, but no less heavy. The different pace shown in the 4th song, ‘Byldemor’ benefits the album immensely and there is even a cow bell battered by the drummer!  It leads well into the final epic track.

Even though the track is half the album length, it doesn’t feel like it. There are enough layers and textures to keep you interested. The previous 4 songs are a precursor to what is the main event.

With Skarpretterfossilet, Jesper Bagger Hviid and Erik Bagger Hviid, the duo behind Broderhave released an album that is pure raw aggression, deliberately murky and ultimately immensely enjoyable and I look forward to repeat listens.
