Gilded Form – Gilded Form
Burning World Records
Released 1 Dec 23

The self-titled debut album by Gilded Form is an oddity. A 40 minute, single song is all it contains, 40 minutes of self-indulgence and monotonic nonsense, to my ears at least, is what the trio present you with.
A reminder must be given that these 1 listen reviews are based on the chances of subsequent listens. Should you find this album on a streaming service, what are the chances of you listening all the way through and then choosing to have a 2nd or more listens. The review does not represent the quality of the album.
It is safe to say that Gilded Form is not for me. Ii struggled to make it through the entirety of the album. The first 15 minutes of the song is dominated by a single, repeated riff, supported by soothing repetitive synth keys. It has serious meditative qualities that are really quite relaxing and I could imagine somebody sitting in their comfy armchair, with a nice pair of headphones, relaxing to the ambient nature of the music.
The pace of the album rarely changes. Drumming is understated and almost sporadic in nature. The guitar barely changes tone, nor pace and the keys are omnipresent throughout. This is truly
an album for those who have a fancy for ambient drone.
The trio, Nick Millevoi (guitar), Otto Kokke (synthesizer) and Rene Aquarius (drums) are highly experienced musicians, playing in numerous acclaimed underground bands. This comes across in the album. Although not to my taste, the quality of musicianship is superb, the guys have obviously achieved what they have set out to do. The production enhances the overall ambient drone that is crystal clear minimalism.
In truth, I feel bad rating this album as low as I do. It isn’t fair on the band, nor the quality of the song. The fact is, I don’t ‘do’ ambience in my music. I have absolutely no doubts that fans of the genre will score this album incredibly high, and will adore the juice the band show in presenting a single track album. Unfortunately, it just isn’t for me, and I will not listen to this again.
