This is an incredibly intense listen. Cerebral Purgatory is the full length debut album from Aussie band Resin Tomb and it is not an album to put on if you are looking for a gentle relaxing listen after a long day at work. Instead, this is an album that will pick you up by the ears and call you a c*nt before brazingly kicking you in the balls/pussy.

Cerebral Purgatory is unrelentingly heavy. Straight from the opening seconds of the opening track, ‘Dysphoria’, you are aware of this. The brutality displayed by Resin Tomb is an unrestrained joy and it permeates throughout the album. The riffs are nothing short of nasty. This coupled with Matt Budge’s almost tortured vocal delivery dominates the album. Supported by the impressive drums and bass combination, each aspect of the album hits the mark.

album features an impressive intro that develops and builds a sense of anticipation whereas ‘Purge Fluid’ features a riff that wouldn’t be amiss on a ‘Therapy?’ album, albeit ever so slightly heavier.

‘Concrete Crypt’ has a riff that is slightly slower than the previous tracks on the album, and this is contrasted by the urgent riff of the album closer, ‘Putrescence’. Both tracks are held together by Perry Vedelago’s persistent and pummeling drums.

Although there are moments of complete contrast in the tracks, the unrelenting nature of the album is always in the background. This is an album designed to raise the serotonin levels but will do little to help the average person relax. For this reason, it could be a tough listen. It is a definitive mood album that will warrant additional listens, but you must be in the right state of mind.

Truly ferocious and wonderfully heavy, Cerebral Purgatory is a debut album that Resin Tomb should be highly proud of. It is a top drawer release.
