Uncomfortable Knowledge -Lifeline
Self Released
Released 2 Feb 2024

Perhaps the best thing about Lifeline, the sophomore album by French quintet Uncomfortable Knowledge is that a 2nd listen will perhaps offer a differing version of your initial listen.
This introduction will potentially give away my view of this album being worth multiple listens, but it is not for the reason I would normally give a decent score. Parts of this album are very frustrating, other parts have a hint of the spectacular. Subsequent listens, I believe, will juxtapose positions against each other, creating a different listening environment compared to the previous.
Lifeline is 10 tracks long, and for each and every track the vocal delivery is, on the whole, a decent shouty performance. The issue is it is incredibly consistent, with little or no nuance throughout the tracks. Yes, there are a few aspects where a slight difference in cadence or urgency is noted, but for the main part it is a, admittedly very good, uninspired vocal throughout.
That is the frustrating aspect of the album. Fortunately, Uncomfortable Knowledge deliver enough variety in the delivery of Lifeline that the vocals fit perfectly
within each track. This allows the lack of variety to fade into a form of insignificance, albeit with the nagging consistency always at the back of your mind.
Throughout the 10 tracks, we are hit with a myriad of guitar riffs that evolve within each and every track. There are riffs that remind of Judas Priestand Therapy? amongst other bands, but never quite imitating them. The result has a subtle hint of awesome about it.
Despite the often similarity in track delivery, they do not blend into one. The differentiation is always there, be it a slight change of pace, a bigger emphasis on the Bass runs, or an increase in the aggression of the drums. Each track varies in its overall delivery that the listener will be consistently challenged.
This challenge is the strength of the album. As ever, I have listened to this album once. The review is based on 1 listen and this listen determines whether it is worth more. Lifeline is an album that has potential to deliver different pleasure points each time you plug it in. My next listen will provide a differing experience than the debut listen.
Uncomfortable Knowledge have an album that hold genuine intrigue to the listener. So many ideas sit within the structure of each individual song that multiple listens should elicit a different experience.
Lifeline is an album that deserves your full and unadulterated attention.
