In 2008, Tim Lambesisdeclared his undying love for all things Arnold Schwarzenegger with his side project, Austrian Death Machine. ‘Total Brutal’ was a tribute/parody album that is a relatively decent listen, but is, by a long way, not at all serious. 2 other albums demonstrating increased forms of the aforementioned ‘Brutal’ followed until, in 2014, lets refer to them as ‘circumstances’ led to the project being put on hiatus.

10 years have passed, and now Arnie’s tribute has returned, Quad Brutal, the 4^th of the increasingly brutal albums, has been released and it is now no parody. Yes, the lyrical content is about Arnold, but the musicality is utterly immense. The fun factor of the earlier, particular the debut, albums has all but disappeared and we are left with what is a superior slice of cross-over thrash/metalcore with subtle death metal overtones interjected. In short, this album is brilliant.

over the album. There are moments of superb vocal harmonies and songs where you can’t help but headbang. Solos are well placed, production is great and it is a ‘parody’ album.

Let us just get one thing straight. The musicianship on Quad Brutal sets this apart from anything previously released by Austrian Death Machine. The album has a crushing groove that gives added depth and gravitas. In some ways, it is a bit disappointing that this has been released as an Austrian Death Machine album, as many people will pre-judge it and not give it the attention it merits.

With a cornucopia of guests on the album, many people can be proud, but the proudest of all should be Tim Lambesis, who has resurrected a parody concept and delivered an album of such quality that it utterly dwarfs the lesser ‘Brutal’ albums. Quad Brutal indeed!
