Necrophobic – In the Twilight Grey
Century Media
Released 15 Mar 2024

Necrophobic are back with their latest album In the Twilight Grey and it is fair to say that these Swedes are as uncompromising as ever. Originally formed back in 1989, these guys have seen it all. The rise of the 2nd wave of Black Metal, the fall of said wave and then the rise of more modern black metal. Throughout it all, despite numerous band member changes, Necrophobic have stayed true to their cause and released solid to good albums throughout the years.
In the Twilight Grey is an album that is definitely high up in their quality list. It is insanely catchy, it smacks of blackened death metal, it contains subtle hints and nods to fellow Swedes, Amon Amarth, particularly in tracks such as album opener ‘Grace of the Past’ and ‘As Stars Collide’. This is a good thing, because although there is a hint of Amon Amarth, it is no mere sound-a-like. No, Necrophobic are too long experience to let their own, well developed, sound waver.
It is this confidence that makes the album even more enjoyable. With incredibly strong vocals, big juicy riffs and a drum sound that it, quite frankly, ridiculously good. There are 10 tracks on
offer here and my notes on track 6 exclaim, ‘This is a great album’. There are no weak songs on here, well, nearly none.
Track 9, ‘In the Twilight Grey’is a near 8 minute epic and should be the close of the album, but alas Necrophobic saw fit to end the album with a gentle closing track that is probably not needed.
Minor gripes aside, this is an album that I have high hopes for. My only listen so far is a definite prelude to multiple listens that could potentially see In the Twilight Grey troubling my top 10 for 2024.
It is that good!
