Oakfarm – Oakfarm

If you are lucky, you have already been listening to this album on streaming sites since the 22nd March, as the eponymous debut from 70’s infused German rockers Oakfarm has been on those sites for a few weeks. However, Pink Tank Records are releasing this album on vinyl and if ever an album deserves to be heard on vinyl, it is this one.

From the gentle beginnings of album opener, ‘What if’, Oakfarm confidently ram home their brand of 70’s rock with a subtle degree of swagger. This is an album that is dripping with a truly authentic 70’s vibe. It oozes a less pretentious latter day Zeppelin, whilst dropping hints of Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac (the better era for that band).

8 tracks long, Oakfarm is an album that has no weak moments, it is utterly enjoyable from the opening track to the closing refrains of ‘The Melody’, an 8 minute masterclass of bluesy

heavy rock, punctuated with a neat solo. By now my notes have taken 2nd stage, as I just wanted to hear the music. In fact, but note for track 8 simply states, ‘This is a good listen, very enjoyable album’.

There are riffs reminiscent of Neil Young, especially in ‘Sombre Vita’, a track that also features a judicious use of a cymbal. Great stuff. Perhaps the most frustrating element of the album is the fact that I just couldn’t place who the guitarist/vocalist, Tobias Lemberger, reminded me of. He has a wonderful voice that sounds like both everyone and nobody and it suits the music perfectly. The rest of the trio are made up of drummer Dennis Oelze and bassist Arne Döpper. The triumvirate combination have created something almost, but not quite great.

For yet another time, I will use the word ‘enjoyable’ once again, as this is the perfect adjective to describe the album. There is not a single weak moment. That is an undeniable fact. Another undeniable fact is that the album doesn’t really provide truly stand out moments. It is quite simply an incredibly well constructed album that falls a tickle short of perfect.

I discussed this album with a friend at work, recommending that he listens to it. I will recommend it to other friends with a similar recommendation. I will also give it a very well deserved 2nd listen in a short while. I cannot wait to hear new music by a very talented trio in the future.
