The DevilsHorns

It has been a long time since Dååth have troubled the metal scene, in fact, it is 14 years since this progressive death metal juggernaut released their eponymous 4^th album. Now, in 2024, the Atlanta based band return with album number 5, The Deceivers.

It is a welcome return. The Deceivers has been released into what is an incredibly fertile Death Metal scene and so the band have had to rise to a challenge where a 14 year hiatus could have seen them flounder. But a change of personnel and a fresh approach, sees founding member Eyal Levi and returning vocalist Sean Zatorsky craft an album with a supremely grandiose sense of purpose.

performance by Zatorsky. This is immediately followed by, ‘Hex Unending’, a track with a sweet lead and a noticeable bassline. Slightly gothic in feel, it has hints of Fleshgod Apocalypse and contrasts will with the opener. It is an assured start after a long hiatus.

The Deceivers then settles down into a superior groove. Its near 44 minute run-time is by no means oppressive, nor is it over too soon. It fits the album. Various ideas are snuck into tracks, ‘Ascension’ sees guitars having Steve Vai intricacies. ‘The Silent Foray’ is unrelenting before it hits a groove that just doesn’t quit. ‘Purified by Vengeance’features a cartoon-like, almost ‘Infinity’ era Devin Townsend riff before finding itself in a Pantera-esque groove.

The Deceivers is essentially just a very strong album, with excellent performances delivered by the whole band.

Dååth have given us a track called, ‘Unwelcome Return’. The Deceivers is anything but. This is an album that sits on the ‘must listen’ pile and for you not to check it out is doing yourself a massive disservice.
