Sunnata – Chasing Shadows

Written by:

Chasing Shadows is the 5th album by Polish sludgy doomsters, Sunnata. The first thing to mention here is that this is not a background album. The one listen given to this was when I was very busy with other tasks. It does, however, give a good insight into the type of album Chasing Shadows is. Some albums can sit comfortably as background noise, a mild distraction. Sunnata have released an album that utterly demands attention for you to get the most out of it.

At 62 minutes long, Chasing Shadows is also an album that demands a decent chunk of your day. Throughout the 11 tracks, there are a few interlude moments that breaks up the longer songs, 4 of them being about the 8 minute mark. This is important, as it prevents the album from dragging.

By far the biggest impression you will get from Sunnata is the vocals. The tracks are littered with Alice in Chains style vocal harmonies, but not as good. When listening to

this in the background, it was the one thing that stood out and became almost a focal point of the track.

This is unfair.

Sunnata record live. All instruments at the same time. I’m not sure this includes the vocals, but if it does, I doff my cap to the 4 piece. In a world where bands record their individual parts over and over again, sometimes in different studios, even other parts of the world, it is refreshing to have an old-school mentality when it comes to recording as a band.

Oh, did I mention this is self-released?

With no record label support, it is astonishing to have an album as polished as this (no pun intended). Chasing Shadows is crisp, clean and delivered to a high production standard (at least for the parts of the album I concentrated on uninterrupted).

So, set aside an hour of your day, put on your headphones and settle into a world of sludgy doom and envelope yourself in Sunnata. I didn’t listen to this properly, and it is deserving of a 2nd chance.
