King Zog – Second Dawn

Written by:

Surely Australia is too hot for a Doom band, but no, King Zog have returned with their sophomore album, Second Dawn a mere 7 years after their self-titled debut.

The Perth sun has not diluted the heavy. King Zog bring the heavy with each and every track, even the shorter introductions or interludes. Second Dawn is a heavy album, period!

The heavy exists via seriously ominous riffs, check out the opening riff to ‘Rat King’. This track is a typical doom track containing vocals from Daniel Durack that are strangely familiar and comforting. Then, seemingly from out of nowhere, we are hit with the first of many solos that splatter their merry way across the album. It is excellent and raises the track above the norm.

They band also break tracks up in a manner that diversifies the aural assault you are receiving, ‘Creep On’ benefitting mostly from this approach. ‘Brute Beast’ is a track that I have

described in my notes as having a section that is, and I quote ‘Slow bit, contemplative, meandering, nice’. This slower section is then left behind with a massive riff bring the track back – it is good stuff.

Perhaps the biggest gripes in the album include ‘Aruna, Sunmonger’, which I consider a filler, but others may find a good breather. The final, title track of the album, is slow and measured and features Durack’s most assured vocals. It is, by a long way, the longest song on the album and it’s length allows the album to peter out in a slightly unsatisfactory way.

The good news is that there is a repeat button and you can listen to the thing all over again, which is what I am going to do.
