Mammoth Caravan – Frostbitten Galaxy

Everybody loves a bit of Doom, right? But, there are a lot of modern doom bands who have ethereal vocals, soaring high above the riff. What if you have a bit of doom with real dirty, growly vocals, scraping their larynx dry? This is Mammoth Caravan, a trio from Little Rock, Arkansas. Frostbitten Galaxy is their 2nd album and it is 6 tracks of fuzz-laden sludge infused doomy goodness.

Frostbitten Galaxy is an album that believes in ‘the riff’. The intense intro to opening track ‘Absolute Zero’ is a prelude to a cracking fuzzy riff that oozes doom from its decrepit core. This is DOOM, proper doo, tinged with the subtle hint of sludge, a sound that permeates the album.

Vocally, we have the harshest of vocals from Brandon Ringo. The vocals enhance the riffs. As much as I love bands with the higher vocal range, the gravel nature of a dirty gnarly riff just

makes the depth of the bass and the fuzz of the riff that much more intense. ‘Siege in the Stars’ is a prime example. The epic doom sound is constant but the vocals just reach deep into your soul, relax, and make themselves at home. It is a joy that should never be tainted.

The first 5 tracks do not loiter, the album is a mere 36 minutes long. So when track 6 begins, you will be slightly disappointed it is about to end. But then…. then you are hit with a clean vocal curveball. The intro is deliberate and slow, with a psychedelic ambience that doesn’t exist in the previous tracks. About 4 minutes and 47 seconds in, the riff kicks in, but it is less intense and it is this that perhaps leads to this being a fantastic end to a strong album.Mammoth Caravan have release as fine a doom album as you will hear this year. Listen, enjoy and think of me enjoying my 2nd listen of Frostbitten Galaxy as I work tomorrow.
