Escuela Grind – Dreams on Algorithms

So, this review is a few days behind the norm, as in it was released nearly 2 weeks ago. However, real-life work meant that I didn’t have time to write the review – fortunately, I take notes, so all is not lost.

Escuela Grind are heavy. So heavy in fact, that it is genuinely difficult to pigeonhole their 2nd album, Dreams on Algorithms into any set genre. This is very refreshing – I hate made-up genres of metal. Essentially, what we have here is 10 tracks of genuine, aggressive extreme metal performed to an increasingly high standard.

Dreams on Algorithms is not an album that many people will use to wind down to, no this is a fist pumping, neck stretching seething pit of magnificence that will get your blood boiling before the end of the excellent opening track, ‘DOA’. The guitar tone is set to ‘heavy’ throughout, the drums are an attack borne out of attrition, and there will always only be one winner. The unrelenting aggression is, dare I say it, entrancing.

Vocally, Katerina Economou absolutely nails it. Dripping with festering anger, she impresses in the same way Corpsegrinder does, especially in ‘Planned Obsolescence’, with

the track have a slow, methodical riff that never eases up in its intensity.

Dreams on Algorithms is a short album, the 10 tracks last just over 30 minutes. This is to the benefit of the listener, as Escuela Grind’s savagery will consume those who are lacking in the preparation for the heavy.

If you are going to listen to one album that struggles to fit easily into a set genre, choose Dreams on Algorithms.
