Ixion – Evolution

Evolution by French band Ixion is a compilation of 3 EP’s released in 2024, ‘Extinction’. ‘Restriction’ and ‘Regeneration’. The album explores the evolution of mankind, its interactions with androids, and the rise of post-humanism. On the lighter side of doom, Evolutionincorporates a meld of different genres, including 80’s tinged electronica. This ultimately leads to an album that comes across as confused and hints at self-indulgence.

It is also a long album, 16 tracks lasting over the hour mark. This can be explained by the combination of the 3 EP’s, but it causes the album to last a long, long time.

Perhaps listening to the short form versions, with a break in between the differing styles, would help the first time listener, but this is a drag. The tracks all start similarly, a subtle change here and there, such as a Hammond organ in ‘The Weight of Ignorance’ through to the electronica in ‘The Laws of Life’.

There are some very good moments in the album, potentially spread across the 3 EP’s, which I have not checked out. ‘In Fear of the Machines’ is intriguing, where ‘Give up the Ghost and Pen Your Eyes’ has some sweet guitar spread throughout.

As I base these reviews on a one and only listen, it can be quite tough to talk bad of an artists vision and their subsequent release. But for me, Evolution does not work as an album. It is very obviously the sum of 3 parts and I will not listen to this again in this guise. I would however, check out the 3 EP’s instead and wallow in the individuality that they contain.
