Cross Bringer – Healismus Aeternus

Written by:

Cross Bringer have released their 2nd album, an album with a title that will confuse my spell-checker as I type! Healismus Aeternus is the name of said album and it is 27 minutes or so of black metal. It is described as being about ‘spiritual confusion and self-discovery’. Personally, I just think it is a very decent listen.

Each of the 5 tracks on show slide effortlessly into the black meal genre. The guitar tone of the opening track, ‘Desolation Hypnosis’ is more than enough confirmation. Vocally, we have Lina providing some serious black metal style vocals, as she utterly rips her throat out with a subtle degree of style and panache throughout the album.

There are also clean vocals in sections. ‘Structural Imbalance’ benefits from the inclusion of these vocals, with the words floating around the inherent mayhem created by the band. It is good stuff.

It isn’t all hugs and kisses though. Sometimes the driven pace of the song just comes across as too much. ‘The Vessel’ is a song that is full of endeavour, full of vigour and raw aggression, but it comes across as being slightly erratic. This is a minor quibble though. Healismus Aeternus is an enjoyable album.

Cross Bringer have released a relatively short album, but with only 5 tracks, you can tell there are some songs with a meaty running time. In restricting the album to just 27 minutes, you are rewarded as a listener. The length benefits the album as it doesn’t appear like a short sharp shock, it is more like an extended EP that leaves you on the edge of wanting more.

If you are a fan of Black Metal, this is well worth your time. If you’re not a fan, it is also worth your time.
