My Dementia – Premonição: Só Me Arrependo Do Que Não Vivi

Premonição: Só Me Arrependo Do Que Não Vivi, or ‘Premonition: I Only Regret What I Didn’t Live’ is the debut full length album by Portuguese death/doom outfit My Dementia. It is an album borne out of profound sadness, with the vocalist, Miguel Carneiro tragically passing not long after the album recording was complete.

In listening to this, I wasn’t aware of the back-story as I often like to base the one listen review on minimal information. I knew the genre, band name and album title. On reading the bio provided, it dawned on me that my notes listed many positive comments about the vocals throughout, from the first comment, ‘good grunt’, to ‘vocals strong’ and ‘vocals lead to enjoyable doom’. If Premonição achieves anything, it is at the very least a terrific legacy for a talented vocalist.

The album itself is very interesting, it has an ebb and flow about it with 1 true out and out banger of a track. ‘The Eternal Wanderer’ is a track with a seriously good riff. Good solos enhance the melancholy and the

track expands and grows into somewhat of a monolith. It far and away dominates a decent album.

My Dementia are also not scared to delve deep into an almost monotonic style riff. The slow repetitive nature of the riff in the mid-section of ‘Sin’s Demise I’ is perfectly placed, before the track picks up again. It allows the listener to breathe and relax which is welcoming.

At 66 minutes long, Premonição is definitely a doom-length album. All but 1 of the 6 tracks provided clock in at over 10 minutes. This requires investment into the listen. It is not a quick-delve into a couple of tracks. If you take the time to sit down, relax and immersive yourself into the experience, you will find an album that is both melancholic, hypnotic and, crucially, an enjoyable listen.
