Leonov – Shape of Ash (EP)

Written by:

Shape of Ash is a 4-track EP from doomy shoegaze outfit, Leonov. Female fronted with the utterly delectable vocals of Tåran Reindal, it is an utterly engaging listen with a few twists and turns in its 23 minute run-time.

Throughout the EP, an omnipresent deep rumbling bass, courtesty of Morten Kjelling, ensures that the heavy is maintained throughout, contrasting with the Windhand style vocals. The effect is mesmerizing, be it through the haunting broodiness of ‘Samaritan’ or the dying heaviness of the title track, ‘Shape of Ash’. The EP slaps post-metal infused riffs with a doom overlay, one that entrances as well as forcing itself upon you.

Perhaps the best aspect of the EP is the surprising ‘Bygg En Menneskekropp’. Guest vocalist, Syvert Feeld brings his folky voice to a track that is essentially a call-answer style

argument. Hearing the delightfully clean male vocals on the EP just raised it a notch, giving a small sense of satisfaction that Leonov are more than just a good doom band.

They have style, this makes Shape of Ash a particularly good way to spend your time.
