Krigsgrav – Stormcaller

Written by:

Stormcaller is the 8th album by Texan blackened doom stalwarts Krigsgrav. As you would expect, it has the sound and aura of a band that knows what they are doing and is comfortable in their own sound.

The opening track, ‘Huntress of the Fire Moon’is immediate. It is a big opening, good growled vocals and immediately gets the head-nodding and the heart pumping. It is a serious demonstration of intent from the quartet, bringing the heavy with relative ease.

The title track of the album is next up, and ‘Stormcaller’ does its best to give you a subtle bludgeoning from the outset. Well produced, vocals that excel, with a decent riff, the band are delivering their own brand of fire. Hopes are high that the 52 minute, 8 song album will continue to grow and improve.

Except it doesn’t. Krigsgrav, Swedish for War Grave, basically just pile along with an incredibly consistent album. It maintains your interest throughout, without

ever really pushing on and exploring that boundary. Perhaps this is to be expected for a band with 7 previous albums under their belt.

There are no weak tracks. Nothing to make you want to skip. All tracks have an interesting intro, ‘None Shall Remember Your Name’ being a prime example. It is the longest track on the album, but has more than enough about it to maintain interest. To be fair, there are no exceptionally long tracks considering the genre. All have texture and layers, and the drumming is superb throughout, making even the slower songs, ‘Twighlight Fell’, seem that much heavier.

Stormcaller is a good, but not great, album. It grabs you and holds you tight, but it isn’t quite the bear-hug you want. I will give this more than this one-listen that this review requires. My interest is piqued.
