Uaar – Galger og Brann
Fysisk Format Records
Released 17 Oct 25

‘Gallows and Fire’ is the title of the debut album by D-beat hardcore outfit Uaar in English. In their native Norwegian, its proper name is Galger og Brann. The reason to mention the translation first as this album does have a hint of fire about it.
First of all, it is relentless. It is 11 tracks crammed into an all-action near 28 minutes. Uaar do not miss a (d) beat… It rattles along like a gladiators chariot, bouncing about oozing menace and danger. Opening track, ‘Alt Skal Brenne’ fires into your psyche with unapologetic glee. The disgustingly good growl of vocalist Dag Schaug Carlsen is key, not only to the track, but the album. The vocals set them aside from other hardcore acts, separating them from the pack.
Galger og Brann is dark at its heart, described as ‘visceral testament to rage, destruction, and the possibility of renewal through fire’. ‘Tusen Rep’ is considered before the hardcore
fires in part way through before easing to a close, ‘Den Siste’ is similar, with a deliberate opening that evolves into the track. It is really very enjoyable.
But it is the vocals that are the separator. The 5-piece band are experienced in the hardcore scene and obviously know how to construct an album. Crucially, they also know how to construct a song. Only 2 tracks outstay 3 minutes, and then only just. But it is in shorter tracks, such as ‘Overalt’ that they manage to dive different ideas into it’s under 2 minute run-time. They allow the songs to differentiate themselves as they develop. A very clever trick when you are playing in a very structured genre.
This is a very good debut. Rattling riffs, splendid vocals and the pummeling rhythm section makes for a good time and an excellent half hour wasted.
