Wolfbastard – Satanic Scum Punks

Let’s start this review differently – Satanic Scum Punks by Manchester blackened crust punk crew Wolfbastard is a seriously good album!

With album number 4, the trio have signed with the magnificent Apocalyptic Witchcraft, and by Satan’s bawsack have they delivered. Opening track, ‘It’s Fucking Dark’, starts with a restrained doomy riff, before Dez fires in a stupendous scream before the crust punk attack begins. The vocals are spat out with a viciousness that belies the almost catchy fast and aggressive riff. It is a great beginning.

What then happens across the next 29 ½ minutes is an unrelenting assault on the senses. Wolfbastard know what they are about – they provide killer riffs, powerful aggressive drums and an unwavering confidence in the fact that they are providing a top quality album.

‘Satanic Scum Punks’, the eponymous 2nd track, was the first to get my head nodding and even the air drums were broken out. The guitar tone was absolutely lush and it was

disappointing when the longest song on the 11 track album finished. But fear not, Satanic Scum Punks does not ease off. ‘Let the Bastards Burn’ has a juicy riff that is both somehow threatening yet once again catchy. ‘Hail Satan Kurwa’ saw an involuntary raising of the ‘horns’.

You want a few singalong choruses? Wolfbastard give you a handful, perhaps not singalong, but in a live setting you will gleefully shout ‘fuck of then die’ in ‘F-O-T-D’ as the band rage, in album closer ‘B-I-F-F-O’, the refrain will be ‘bastard, arsehole, BIFFO’

As is the nature of the genre, there is a lack of variation about the album. But it doesn’t matter. The tracks are short enough, 8 of them under 3 minutes, so you don’t get the chance to outgrow them. The all-out attack just doesn’t let up, but again, there is an underlying sense of fun in the riff and the satanic themed lyrics, which provides an unsettling sense of enjoyment.

With album number 4, Wolfbastard have provided their best release yet. Satanic Scum Punks is an album that has no weak areas, unless you lack the juice to embrace your inner crust. A must listen.
