Void of Light – Asymmetries

Written by:

I am proud to be a Scotsman, even more so when albums are released as good as Asymmetries by Glasgow 6-piece collective Void of Light. This debut release is a gargantuan slab of riff-laden post metal, with each and every song delivering something different for the listener.

Opening track, ‘The Passing Hours’ has a gentle start, leading you into a false sense of security, then the riff explodes and the vocals growl. It is a magnificent 10 minutes plus track that never settles, it is like holding an electric fence and enjoying it.

At over 48 minutes long, you could expect to have a decent amount of songs, by Asymmetries has a mere 5, with the shortest, ‘Ends’ coming in at just over 8 minutes. The 8 minutes are well spent, the song is incredibly well constructed, and it is consistently interesting. To be fair, all the songs are consistently interesting, sometimes challenging, but never dull and never fading into dull self-serving obscurity.

The 6-piece band are superb, each delivering an accomplished performance. The riffs are interesting, providing you with constant stimulation. They master a guitar

tone that is enthralling. The songs themselves, due to their length, constantly evolve, not least in album closer ‘Mirrorings’. Perhaps the albums best song, the riff booms, and the track revels within itself. It leaves you with a sense of awe.

Void of Light have only released a handful of songs – this is their debut and it is so well written and delivered that you will press play again as soon as ‘Mirrorings’ comes to a close.

An incredibly strong debut album, Asymmetries is seriously good!
