Dieth – To Hell And Back
Napalm Records
Released – 2 June 2023

Dieth are a band with well-known musicians, who have joined to release their debut album To Hell And Back via Napalm Records. A 3-piece band, Dieth features the talents of Guilherme Miranda on guitars and vocals(ex-Entombed-AD), Michał Łysejko on the drums (ex-Decapitated) and the more famous David Ellefson on bass. Everybody should know his old band.
Described as a Death/Thrash band, Dieth are slightly more than that. To Hell And Back has a good smattering of both genre’s, but a few tracks also have a Stoner tinge and we even have a, wait for it…… a ballad! What is going on?
The album opens with the title track, in a ‘nice’ acoustic fashion before a pummelling riff and booming drums drags the track away from its genteel origin. It is a strong beginning, the
guitars have an excellent tone and the production is huge.
10 tracks in length, To Hell And Back is basically 42 minutes long, and it flies along. With a good genre mix, and a ballad……, it holds your interest throughout, The big issue, as you may have guessed, is the ballad ‘Walk With Me Forever’. Despite it featuring Ellefson on lead vocals for the first time, it is not a good enough song to tie the album together. The biggest crime follows as one of the more Thrash infused tracks on the album,‘Dead Inside’, is not strong enough to instigate an immediate recovery from the meandering ballad.
Fortunately, my notes for ‘The Mark of Cain’, the next track on the album simply state, ‘good track’, and the album begins to regain its equilibrium.
To Hell And Back finishes with an instrumental that ties everything together. When you listen, you will see why this is a nice touch.
There are, however, far more positives than negatives about Dieth’s debut. Throughout the album, the guitar tone is exceptional. The drums and bass sound huge. My headphones are not ridiculously expensive, nor are they a budget set, but the clarity of each instrument is outstanding. To Hell And Back also features top-drawer solo’s. On more than one occasion the air-guitar was out and being played with absolute joy.Dieth are not going to set the world on fire, but what we have is are 3 very experience musicians who have delivered an album that will get your fist pumping and your head banging. You can’t really ask any more, apart from no ballads!
