Eave – Fervor

Written by:

Returning with their 3rd full length album, Eave have returned to their home state of Connecticut to deliver their own brand of Black Metal.

The opening track of Fervor, ‘Past Pulses, lulls you into a false sense of security with its gentle 1st minute before utterly pummelling you with unrestrained fury, before it then settles down again. This is a trope that the band use a lot throughout the 7 tracks on offer. For the most part, it works well, creating a bit of interest in songs that would struggle to hold your attention otherwise.

A frantic riff opens up ‘Chance is a Spectre’, with the vocals sitting lower in the mix, allowing the musicianship to take centre stage. A well-constructed slower section is delivered well

before the track explodes into the final 2 minutes. Probably the best track on the album, you begin to worry that the band has nowhere else to go.

And you would be correct, not that Eave take their collective foot off the gas, more that they just don’t quite hit the quality of the first 2 tracks. Fortunately, there are aspects of the remaining songs that have decent high-points, again allowing you to hold your interest. The bass tone throughout the album is exemplary, especially in ‘Stale Ash’, but more noticeable in album closer ‘Into Perdition’, where the bass dominates the song for long periods.

Vocally, the band deliver as well, with both high and low register growls. In a few of the songs, it is the vocal style that is the only reason you would say it is an extreme metal album. You could describe a few of the riffs having a slight melancholy influence.

With Fervor, the band have recorded an album that will not set the black metal genre on fire, instead it will sate the need for a decent black metal album until a ‘great’ one comes out. We could wait a long time for a truly ‘great’ black metal album, and so Eave will easily fill the void.
