Grand Cadaver – Deities of Deathlike Sleep

Grand Cadaver are a super-group of sorts featuring members of prominent bands, including Dark Tranquillity and. Deities of Deathlike Sleep is the 2nd album by the band, an album that they never planned to make. Indeed, the band state that even their debut album was never planned. The fact that we now have 2 full length albums and an EP demonstrates the quality the band have to offer.
10 Tracks long, but lasting under 35 minutes, Deities of Deathlike Sleep fires in, sating your desire for chainsaw riffs and delicious song titles such as, ‘A Crawling Feast of Decay’, or ‘Stabbed with Frozen Blood’. This album stays true to the roots of the genre, something that should be applauded, if not merely appreciated.
Opening with a spectacular scream in ‘The Forever Doom’, Grand Cadaver proceed to provide you with consistent, enjoyable Death Metal. You will hear riffs reminiscent of The
Haunted, growled vocals that you can understand, there are tracks that allow a bass lead for a time but perhaps the best aspect of the album is the track placement
With an album this length, there is no real danger of it lasting longer that it should. However, some Death Metal albums can be turgid, with repetitive riffs allowing song to blend into song, so much so that the listener does not know where one stops and the other begins. This is not an issue with Deities of Deathlike Sleep.
Grand Cadaver have not fallen into that trap. Superior song-craftsmanship allows the album to flow through the use of bludgeoning heavy riffs, slow intense riffs as well as menacing riffs, sometimes in the same track. The upshot of this is an album that is short, but full of earworm variation.
Grand Cadaver may not have planned to release albums, but this one will receive multiple plays, as will the 3rd that will hopefully join us in a few years.
