Legendary Danish Death Metal stalwarts, Undergang are back with a 7-track, 21 minute EP full of classic old-school death metal. De Syv Stadier af Fordæv, or The Seven Stages of Depravity in English begins then proceeds to pulverize the senses with delicious buzz-saw guitars, vocals that are aggressive, yet controlled and a rhythm section that steers the crushing riffs with aplomb.

Most of the tracks are relatively short, hence the short running time, and so this EP is perfect if you need a quick shot of Death Metal to get your heart started in the morning. Despite the brevity of some of the songs, a lot of ideas permeate throughout the tracks, a clever trick that allows a song under 2 minutes in length to develop continually before it finishes. This is not an EP designed to bludgeon you into submission, instead it teases you, it hints at full-on beast mode, but it never allows the tracks to be boring and there is not a hint of repetitiveness at all.

Perhaps, however, the EP is held back by the shorter tracks? Clocking in att 5 minutes, Misfarvning af liget, or ‘Discoloration of the corpse’, is perhaps the best song on the EP. The longer running time allows for an intro that welcomes in the riffs and dirty growls. With a hint of Obituary and a nod to Entombed, the track is like a warm welcoming 90’s Death Metal hug!

De Syv Stadier af Fordæv may not set the world alight, but it will sate your desire for quality, old-school Death Metal, when you don’t have time for a full album.
