With it being many years since Nifelheim released a full-length album, coupled with the band not playing live since 2022, Hellbutcher makes a welcome return to the satanic metal fold with his debut album, also called Hellbutcher. It is plain from the off that he has taken this seriously.

Hellbutcher has assembled a band full of experienced musicians, including Necrophiliac, Devastator, Eld and Iron Beast. A quick look through Metal Archives will fill you in on their catalogue. The result is that 8 track, 33 minute album is serious accomplished.

a song that also contains, dare I say it, a hint of WASP. Motorhead can also be recognised in tracks such as Death Rider and throughout the entire album is a thrash undertone, especially in the albums sheer speed.Each riff is attached with purpose and the guitar-work across all of the songs is outstanding. There are massive air-guitar moments, playing along to solo’s only Beelzebub himself can authorise. The album is unrelenting, the pace never ever lets up and when the album is complete, you feel bruised from the inside out.

Vocally, Hellbutcher nails it. They are consistent though-out and sit comfortably within the construct of each song. The mix is very high quality, which could be another reason why you can’t consider this black metal.

Hellbutcher does try to maintain a satanic theme throughout, but the best thing is that it does not come across as serious as a true black metal album. It is more welcoming, more seductive in a way, even though the tracks are seriously fast at times. This album, whilst not in the great category, is a strong debut from Hellbutcher and when the band tour, hopefully with this line-up, they would be well worth going to see.
