Devil Moon Risen – Fissures of Men

Written by:

Fissures of Men is the debut album from Phoenix trio Devil Moon Risen. Self-released, it is the sound of an album made by a few friends who don’t quite know who they are.

This is a strong point of an enjoyable album.

Described as ‘blending punk-informed desert rock’, Devil Moon Risen are much more than this, there is a massive slab of noise rock to their sound, with the vocalist spitting out his lines in a not to dissimilar way to Bad Powers. This performance, coupled with an insanely good drum sound propels the album continuously forward.

Each track ebbs and flows, stretching genre boundaries and easing them back again. Riffs are repetitive, but never boring, ‘Concious Spring’ being a great example.

Overall, the guitar-work is decent, but not always great. It works within the confines of the album. I’ve got to say that the solo towards the end of ‘The Rim’ is outstanding, if only there were a few more.

Production wise, Fissures of Men is a bit grimy, occasionally a little lo-fi. Again, this helps to give the album traction, makes it a more interesting listen. Obviously, being self-released, there is no label funding to help the band, so production is part of the release cycle that needs the listeners forgiveness.

The ever-present quirkiness in the album helps to define it. Once Devil Moon Risen settle on a sound, pick their genre, future albums could see the trio doing well.
