So a slight, ‘I have no time’, issue prevented me from checking out the, rather fine, 3^rd album, Cosmic Dawn by Californian heavy metal quartet Coffin Hunters last week.

This album is deep-rooted firmly in the 70’s and 80’s, not impersonating that era, but complimenting it, paying homage to the time. This makes it a lot of fun, bringing joy to your ears. Just shy of 43 minutes long, the 8 tracks will hypnotise you with catchy riffs and jaunty bass-runs. It is by no means the perfect album, but I would imagine that on some days it could appear that.

The album opener, ‘Isle of the Dead’, is a heady mix of heavy metal riffs and sci-fi shenanigans that could be the theme to a tv show. It captivates you from the off and then leads into what is perhaps the best track on Cosmic Dawn, ‘Skeleton Key’.

There are a couple of miss-steps. The album beings to lose its way just 3 tracks in, due in main to a drop in pace and is then compounded with another weaker track straight after. In this case, weaker just means ‘very good’ as opposed to ‘excellent’ so the criticism is minor, but still valid.

Fortunately, Coffin Hunters fire up the fun-factor again and the album recovers with aplomb. They rattle through tracks, with riffs that ooze class and sophistication and with keys that wander about with magnificent abandon, providing added depth and almost intrigue in parts. Then, you have the excellent, ‘Blood Moon’, where the boys unleash their inner aggression with an almost thrash-like assault and vocals that are delivered with pure conviction. Good stuff!

Cosmic Dawn is the most fun I have had listening to an album for a wee while now. It is infectious, has wonderful groove and authenticity and just leaves you feeling like you have had a good time. The slight drop in intensity early on is a minor blot on a superb album.
