Abrams – Loon

Written by:

Denver 4-piece, Abrams are back with their latest album Loon. Keeping up their album every 2 years tradition, there is a subtle change with Loon. Their sludge leanings of the previous few albums is firmly in the background, as Abrams lean more into a post-hardcore sound. The change isn’t quite seismic, but it is incredibly enjoyable.

The album is only 34 minutes long, and the boys cram 9 well-constructed tracks into it. Opener, ‘Glass House’ sets the scene, delivering a song blending ferocity with a catchy, somewhat uncomplicated riff. It is effective and captures their intent immediately.

‘White Walls’ continues the attack. This one has a jarring riff that develops as the song progresses, blending superbly with the vocals. ‘Last Nail’ completes the opening triumvirate.

Again, it drives home Abrams’ new approach. Interestingly, although the sound is similar, there are 3 separate approaches to the songs. It piques your interest, almost daring you to continue listening as opposed to cajoling the listener. It is pleasantly abrasive.

Loon is a joy to listen to. Frequently jarring, the riffs still find time to capture you. They bring in an approach that you may here in Cave In but with less intensity. Perhaps this is caused by riffs that could be found on a pop-punk album or like the 80’s genius of Scottish band Big Country. Other comparisons could be Primus and Smashing Pumpkins. How can a band display influences as diverse as this, sometimes in the same song, and yet have a sound that is pure Abrams?

Some songs are just effortlessly good, ‘Waves’ being a prime example. Foregoing the jarring aggression, this song still dark but, dare I say it, the melodic approach exposes the dark undertones in a manner that an aggressive approach wouldn’t match. It is excellent.

Sometimes a 1st listen just hits all the right notes. Loon is an album that does this. It is so good that I immediately pre-ordered the vinyl as the closing embers of the album drifted away.

A must listen.
