Gozu – Gozu VI

Written by:

Gozu have told us how deep they are into their career with the release of their 6th album through naming it Gozu VI. This should be treated as a sign, a sign that Gozu know exactly what they are doing and that they know how to release an album that has more riffs than it can safely handle.

The Boston-based band open with ‘Corinthian Leatherface’ – I love the song title for some reason – and it is an incredibly strong intro to VI. With a tone similar to the mighty Kyuss, the boys indulge in heavy riffs, strong vocals and an overall sense of catchiness. Immediately, you are hooked and looking forward to the next track.

Gozu slow it down with the 2nd song. The pace is a good contrast to the energetic opener and ‘Midnight Express’ purposely lacks the enthusiasm of the

preceding track. With its deep riff and lyrical content, ‘help me I’m falling’, perhaps the pacing is no surprise.

The good thing about this 8-track, 47 minute long album is, in fact, the variety. Gozu have used their experience to get the track-listing correct. Slower songs are followed by a different paced track, and each song has a magnificent guitar tone to give you aural pleasure. The riffs explode as well, see ‘They Did Know Karate’ (another great song title) and album closer, ‘Corvette Summer’.

Vocally, Marc Gaffney, delivers throughout the album, with his atypical stoner/desert rock drawl giving a solid emphasis to the tracks. Even in the lamentable power-ballad, ‘Corner Lariat’, perhaps the only disappointing song on the album, the vocals hold it together, as does the omnipresent guitar tone.Gozu VI is a fine album. An excellent addition to the genre and has some superb moments that urge repeat listens – taking the ballad aside, you have big riffs, excellent tone and strong vocals. What more can a stoner band do?
