Electric Sun Defence – Estuary
Road to Masochist
Released 8 May 26

Estuary is the debut album by Scottish progressive post-metal duo Electric Sun Defence. Let us get to the rub of it straight away. This is a very good album. It is superbly constructed, challenging in bits, but also soothing and comforting elsewhere. It delivers tangible emotions that wreak havoc with your listening pleasure.
Consisting of multi-instrumentalist, Pete Colquhoun, and drummer Joe Cormack, Estuary delivers slabs of early Mastodon and Baroness, but also offers their own take on the post-metal genre. Electric Sun Defence are no copycats. They walk their own path, and it is an exciting walk, with flowing hills and deep valleys.
At 50 minutes in length, and with 10 tracks, the album does not feel that long. Each song has its own dynamic, be it the subtle growth of the title track, ‘Estuary’, before big riffs kick in and decimate your mind, or the spoken word samples that accompany the eerie feeling provided through ‘Spiderweb’. Estuary never stands still. The only slight issue I have is with the instrumental ‘Dysmorph’, which is a bit of a non-event.
With ‘Choke Leper’, the boys really hit their zenith. This is an outstanding song, with clean vocals in the intro, with a slow refrain on the guitar as the song builds.
As the dirty vocals boom, the big fuck-off riff begins. But the track has textures, an uplifting riff in the break out splits the song before it expands out again. I can’t wait to hear this for the 2nd time.
The Scottish post-metal scene is strong at the moment. It would be great to see Electric Sun Defence playing in Glasgow with Beneath a Steel Sky. The vibe would be immense and the music powerful!
Estuary is a formidable debut entry into this genre and I look forward to many listens to this album again. Check out the album and rejoice in Scottish post-metal goodness.
